Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related, and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males eventually leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male.

Oryx
Successfully adapting to harsh conditions where scarce water and intense heat are the norm, its no surprise that this large mammal has solidified itself as Namibia's national animal. The Oryx was chosen as Namibia’s national animal due to its courage, elegance and pride – with the national coat of arms bearing this unmistakable dweller of the desert.

In 2007 Lucy Bates and colleagues at the University of St Andrews found that elephants in Amboseli national park in Kenya, could smell the difference between local ethnic groups and respond accordingly. They found that elephants reacted more fearfully to the smell of clothes worn by a Maasai man than to those from a Kamba man. Of the two groups, the Maasai are traditional elephant hunters and upon smelling the Maasai clothes, the elephants retreated into long grass.

A baby leopard comes into the world without any spots on its coat!
They are quite helpless when newborn, and look like a little fuzzy ball of dark grey fur.
They weigh only about one pound, and are about 5 or 6 inches long.
Their eyes and ears are shut, but they are vocal, making soft squeaking sounds, and their sense of smell is fairly strong, helping them stay close to mother.

The tusks of elephants are in fact modified incisors of the upper jaw. In the wild they grow at a rate of about 15 centimetres every year. Evidence suggests that elephants normally prefer one tusk over the other, similar to being left or right handed in humans. The preferred tusk is known as the master tusk.

African wild dogs are some of Africa’s lesser known animals and certainly some of the most misunderstood. Due to their being critically endangered, with only 5,000 left in the wild, sightings are rare outside of specific areas. However, they are probably Africa’s most effective predators, boasting an 80% success rate with hunts; far higher than the 30% rate of lions.

African opportunist
The spotted hyena is still widely regarded as a scavenger that picks up leftovers at the kills of other carnivores (cheetah, leopard, lion) or feeds on carrion. Although spotted hyenas will scavenge opportunistically, they kill as much as 95% of the food they eat.
Hyenas can be very opportunistic and has been recorded eating almost any mammal, bird, fish or reptile, irrespective of size or species.

Botswana
A landlocked country in Southern Africa, has a landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonal floods. The massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with its fossilized river valleys and undulating grasslands, is home to numerous animals including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs. Truly a wildlife paradise.

Focus
Lions are only found in the wilds in Africa, but the felines have called many places home. Lions used to live in ancient Greece, the Balkans and parts of southern Russia. According to Herodotus and Aristotle, lions were in Greece around 480 B.C., became endangered in 300 B.C. and finally became extinct in Ancient Greece in 100 B.C.

Save the rhino.
Despite best conservation efforts the rhinos numbers are still on the decline at an alarming rate due to illegal poaching. Rhinos are one of those animals, when seen in the wild, you will never forget. If things continue going the way they are that's all they will be....a memory.

Bucket lists🎈
Everyone has one even if it's only in your head. Watching the sun rise over Africa's Masai Mara in a hot air balloon should, in our opinion, be on that list. Tag someone you would love to do this with or if you already have someone in mind let us make it happen for you.

Hunter becomes the hunted.
Although a powerful and clever hunter, leopards are not always at the top of the food chain. Lions and packs of hyenas or wild dogs can kill leopards. There ability to climb is often their last defence.

Mum and bub crossing the Chobe river in Botswana. The flooding of the Okavango Delta in Botswana is truly an exceptional happening and is an experience that will never be forgotten by those who witness it.

Nothing as fierce as a mother's love.
Young lions begin hunting from 11 months; however they remain with their mothers to avoid being attacked by black-backed jackals, hyenas, and leopards which prey on them. When they become 2 years old, they become independent and strong enough to protect themselves.

The Oryx found in Southern Africa is often known by its Afrikaans name - Gemsbok. Female herds include non-territorial bulls who will move between the territories of dominant bulls in search for food. To avoid conflict, non-territorial bulls are submissive towards territorial bulls. Fights between males are often fatal, one or both can receive severe stab wounds.

Cheetah - These fierce felines hunt during the day to avoid competition from other powerful predators such as lions, hyenas and leopards. When the time is right, they sprint from cover, knock down their victim and kill it with a bite to the throat.

Birds in the desert!
Namibia's migratory birds arrive in the summer months with the rains. The Etosha Pan fills with water and you can see many migratory water bird species. You can also usually see thousands of pink Flamingos and Blue Cranes. The nearby region of Damaraland is also known for its spectacular species of birds such as the Herero chat and Monteiro's hornbill.

Strength in numbers!
Hyenas and lions often fight over the same territories and hunt the same prey. This leads to fierce competition between the two animals. They steal each other’s food and kill off the young of their enemies. What Hyenas lack in strength they make up for in smarts and numbers.

The original Easter bunny!
African savanna hares, unlike rabbits, are solitary, nocturnal animals. They rely on camouflage to stay hidden, but can run at up to 70 kilometres (43 mi) an hour and sometimes leap vigorously sideways to break the scent trail they are leaving. They feed mainly on grasses and herbs but also chew roots, shoots and bark and sometimes eat fallen fruit and occasionally fungi. Happy Easter everybody.🐰

Family - One of the main characteristics of the social order in elephants is that males and females live entirely different and separate lives.
Elephants are a matriarchal (female led) society; that is, one that is led by a head cow, who presides over her herd of females. Each herd is made up of mothers, daughters, sisters and aunts.💁 They are guided by the oldest and largest female of the herd.👑

Zebras are particularly cantankerous horses and the males, in particular, often get into scraps, which become much more serious during the breeding season. Zebras are highly polygynous and males do their best to control herds of 1-6 or more females and sequester them from other males as they come into season. Fights between zebra stallions can be vicious, even during the non-breeding season, and typically consist of biting and kicking and can even go to ground....MMA style😂

Lions are found in most areas of the Okavango, including swampy areas where you might not expect to see them. In fact Lions in the Okavango have learnt to swim in pursuit of their prey. As a result many prides in the Delta have more developed fore quarters due to all the swimming they do.🤯

On the Move
A mother cheetah protects her cubs from predators by moving them around to different places after only a few days so other animals don't find them.
Sadly, even though they move around and their fur helps disguise them in the grass, most cheetah cubs won't survive to adulthood.

Africa's most dangerous animal 😇
Hippos are actually responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than lions,leopard or cheetahs. They kill hundreds of people each year.

Fiercely gently
When a lion goes into labor, she separates herself from the pride and gives birth in a private lair, generally producing three to six cubs. After a couple of months, she brings the cubs back to the pride, raising them with the other mothers and offspring. Nursing cubs are in danger from other male lions in the pride, who might kill the cubs they did not father. However, their mothers fight for them, sometimes resulting in their own deaths. Females who lose their cubs quickly enter a new heat cycle, so they possibly breed with the male who killed her last litter.

White rhinos have complex social structures. Groups of sometimes 14 rhinos may form, notably females with calves. Adult males defend territories of roughly one square mile, which they mark with vigorously scraped dung piles. The home range for adult females can be more than seven times larger, depending on habitat quality and population density.

Doing what big cats do best 😎
Leopards are nocturnal animals, meaning they are active at night. During the day, they rest in thick brush or in trees. Leopards are solitary, preferring to live alone. They are very agile and good swimmers. They are able to leap more than 20 feet.

Largest birds on earth
Since they lack teeth, ostriches swallow gravels to grind their food, and an adult ostrich carries nearly one kilogram of stones in its stomach. Ostriches are the fastest of all birds or any other two-legged animal, and they can sprint at more than 70 kilometers per hour, covering up to 5 meters in one single stride.

When they are in a herd the zebra’s distinct stripes merge into a big mass and make it hard for predators to single out individual animals. Zebra are brave animals that care deeply about their group members. When a group member is wounded by a predator attack, other zebras will come to their defence, circling the injured individual and attempting to drive the predator away.

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is the largest single movement of wild animals in the world, deservedly listed as one of its eight Natural Wonders. Around 1.5 million wildebeests, with hundreds of thousands of zebras, elands, gazelles along with a trailing retinue of predators, leave their calving grounds in southern Serengeti, around March and April, heading for the next water source.

Springboks get their name from their jumping abilities. They can leap up to 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) and bounce up again when they hit the ground. With them being on the menu for many of Southern Africa's predators this ability really comes in handy.

Trouble with a capital T 😂
Chacma Baboons are the largest of the baboon species. Highly sociable animals, Chacma Baboons live in groups of four to 200 individuals with variable social structures. They are extremely intelligent and mischievous as the residents of the cape coastal areas of South Africa will tell you.

Laughing his way into the weekend
Hyenas don’t just laugh for fun. Scientists say that the pitch and the note frequency (or tone) of a hyena’s laugh can give an indication of its age and social status.

Cape Town - South Africa
The Western Cape in South Africa has some of the best whale watching anywhere in the world. The whales migrate annually from Antarctica to the coast around Cape Town to calve their offspring. They usually arrive in June and stay until November often giving spectacular shows to spectators on the beaches up and down the coast.

Tag a mate you'd race to the top 😂
Sossusvlei's rust-red dunes, bleached white pans and deep blue sky are instantly recognisable, and symbolise Namibia's vast, dry, uninhabited expanses. They are some of the highest in the world, and the tallest in this area - at a whopping 325m (1,066ft) - is the appropriately named Big Daddy.
The more popular Dune 45 is just 80m high, but people still like to climb the monster Big Daddy mainly for bragging rights.

EYE ON THE PRIZE
At 59kg on average, leopards are the smallest of the big cats, but they are also the most adaptable. They use the full terrain to their advantage. They are good swimmers, excellent climbers and hunt the widest variety of prey of any of the major predators. A leopard's diet can include insects, fish and reptiles, as well as grazing animals. They are as happy to scavenge a meal as hunt one. Over 90 leopard prey species have been recorded in sub-Saharan Africa alone.

The largest elephant on record was an adult male African elephant. It weighed about 24,000 pounds and was 13 feet tall at the shoulder!

SAVE THE RHINO
Rhinoceros poaching is still at crisis levels. 1,028 rhinos were illegally killed last year in South Africa alone. Rhino horn is in demand in Asia, especially in Vietnam. Some erroneously believe it has medicinal value, capable of anything from curing cancer to working as an aphrodisiac. Others use it as a kind of club drug, to be mixed with water or alcohol. In reality, rhino horn is made of keratin, the same material as hair and fingernails, and there’s no evidence that it has any effect, medicinal or otherwise.

Sand dunes and flamingos
Surely one of Africa’s greatest shows is when large flocks of flamingos gather on the saltpans and wetlands of Namibia. Both species of African flamingos can be seen here, namely the lesser and greater flamingo. Lesser flamingos are generally smaller and brighter pink than their counterparts, while greater flamingos are known to gather in flocks of up to 50 000 at shallow lakes, salt pans, lagoons, estuaries and sandy beaches. It’s estimated that some 80% of southern Africa’s flamingos spend time in Namibia during their intra-African migrations, so this is surely one of the best places in the world to see them.

The best way to see the wonders of the bush.
A giraffe's long neck contains only seven elongated cervical vertebrae, the same number as in human necks. Giraffe's sleep, on average, 30 minutes a day.
